My Favorite Rope Trick

This is one of the all-time great beginner rope tricks — simple, visual, and always surprising.

Basic Effect:The magician displays three pieces of rope: one short, one medium, and one long. With a magical gesture, the three unequal ropes visibly become three ropes of the same length. Just when the audience thinks they understand what happened, the ropes are changed back again into three different lengths and may be handed out for examination.

Known to many magicians as the classic Professor’s Nightmare plot, this routine has been performed by beginners, hobbyists, and professional magicians for generations. It is easy to understand, requires very little pocket space, and can be performed close-up, at a table, in a classroom, or in front of a small group.
