Greater Magic by John Northern Hilliard

1994 Kaufman & Greenberg Expanded Edition

A Monumental Encyclopedia of the Magical Arts

Greater Magic by John Northern Hilliard has long been recognized as one of the most important and comprehensive books ever published for magicians.

Originally published in 1938, the book was created as a serious encyclopedia of practical magic intended for performers and students of conjuring. Hilliard’s manuscripts and notes were edited by Carl W. Jones and Jean Hugard, with hundreds of detailed illustrations by Harlan Tarbell.

This highly desirable 1994 Kaufman & Greenberg expanded reprint edition presents the complete original work along with Richard Kaufman’s substantial addition, More Greater Magic. The added material explores the fascinating history and creation of the original book and includes correspondence, photographs, background information and additional routines gathered from previously unpublished material.

The massive volume contains approximately 1,293 pages, followed by a reproduction of the original 38-page promotional prospectus. It is handsomely bound in maroon cloth with gold spine lettering and protected by the distinctive illustrated dust jacket.

According to the publisher’s jacket, the book features:

107 magicians, 715 tricks, 1,030 figures and 1,120 illustrations.

Its remarkably broad contents include card magic, coin magic, billiard balls, silks, ropes, bills, cigarettes and cigars, sponge balls, cups and balls, linking rings, apparatus magic, mentalism, magic squares, stage effects and illusions. Whether you are searching for material to perform, studying the development of classic methods or building a serious magic library, there is enough information here to keep a magician occupied for years.

These copies were recently discovered in our warehouse inventory. They have never been used and remain in fine condition with their original dust jackets. Because they have been stored since the 1990s, very slight shelf or edge wear to the dust jacket may be present.

This is not merely a book of tricks. It is a lifetime course in magic—and at more than 1,300 pages, it may also qualify as light stage equipment.
